Discussed main elements of written satire Homework - continue finishing critical read of A Modest Proposal. Highlight at least one example of each element (Write the # and justification/connection) and answer the questions on Activelylearn.com (login info if needed is on Mr. Steen's website). Elements of Satire 1. Problem: explains background, involves intended audience 2. Evidence of BIG problem. Statistics, general references to other (not acceptable) solutions 3. Lead in to : the SOLUTION (outrageous, satiric) 4. Support: numerical, factual, objective, persuasive 5. False “extravagant” solution that narrator rejects; make proposed solution look more practical. 6. Reviews benefits: gives lists, numbers positive points 7. Concession: gives REAL (practical and serious) solutions but dismisses them as impractical 8. States that he has no self interest; this is all civic duty.
